Kingdom, BlackBerry Avoid Killing the Messenger

August 7, 2010

The impending shutdown of the BlackBerry messenger service in the Kingdom was averted, according to a Saudi official today, after the Kingdom and Research in Motion (RIM), maker of the popular smartphones reached an agreement. The AP reported a BlackBerry server would be set up in Saudi Arabia which should allay local concerns. The article noted, “The Kingdom is one of a number of countries expressing concern that the device is a security threat because encrypted information sent on the phones is routed through overseas computers — making it impossible for local governments to monitor.”
